A British actress of Scottish origins, born in Eastbourne, Sussex, England, United Kingdom. Her works include Solomon and Sheba (1959), The Franchise Affair (1951), and The Lady Vanishes (1979).
She was born to a father who worked as a cloth merchant, and she dreamed of being a violinist, then a tennis player. She appeared in a junior Wimbledon championship in the twenties, but she discovered that she wanted to become an actress, so she joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).
In 1931, she joined the Richmond Repertory Company and spent 3 years at the Dublin's Gate Theatre, then moved between the most important London theaters performing Shakespeare's plays Hamlet and Othello. Her first film appearance was in 1947 in The Mark of Cain, and her work continued after that in cinema and television.
Her roles varied with great skill, including the strict nurse, the harsh mother, the arrogant widow, the nosy, intrusive, and talkative woman, the domineering aunt, the house manager, and the maid. Her physical features helped her play these characters with great success. He died on April 1, 2001 in Edenhall, Cumbria, England, United Kingdom.
