American writer and director, born on July 26, 1899, in Chicago, United States. He wrote over 90 short films between 1924 and 1953. He began his career in a vaudeville double-act called 'Yates and Lawley'. He started working at the Hal Roach Studios where he directed a few early Laurel and Hardy comedies, such as Hats Off (1927), and later worked at the RKO studios directing short films. He died on August 1, 1969, in Los Angeles, USA.
