A British novelist, born in Sunderland, United Kingdom. She graduated from Durham University in 1938 with first-class honors in English, was awarded a first-class Teaching Diploma in English with Art the following year, and in 1941, she gained her master's degree. She held several positions during the Second World War, including a teacher in a primary school, and working as a temporary lecturer in the Department of English at Durham University, and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2009. She developed a literary style of romantic mystery and her novels featured clever and adventurous heroes. She wrote books and poetry for children, but she is best known for the Merlin Trilogy, which falls between historical and fantasy novels. Mary died on May 9, 2014, in the United Kingdom.
