An English actor, born in Stepney, London, United Kingdom. He moved for a while with his family to South Africa, where his father served as Bishop of Claremont. He joined the British Army with the intention of fighting in the Second Boer War and served with the Irish Fusiliers in WWI in the Middle East. He later served as as Provost Marshal (head of the military police) in the city of Baghdad.
He practiced boxing and was named the British Army's Heavyweight Champion in 1918. He landed a role in the acclaimed 1920 film The Call of the Road. He became a leading actor in British silent films. He moved to New York and became a leading actor in American films. He was also an Oscar winner. He died on November 7, 1959 in Newport Beach, California, USA of a heart attack.
