An American-British screenwriter, director, and actor, born in London, United Kingdom. His father is from a wealthy family in Russia and his mother is from Germany. His family left Germany and went to England because of the Nazi regime and worked in import and export. He trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, before settling in Hollywood in the late 1960s. He began his filmmaking career working with Jack Nicholson on the editing of Easy Rider (1969). He appeared in several films, including Drive, He Said (1971), Always (1985), Someone to Love (1987), and The Other Side of the Wind (2018).
