American cartoonist and author, born in New York, USA. After graduating from James Monroe High School in 1947, he enrolled at the Art Students League of New York to study anatomy. In 1965, he wrote about his early years and received a prize in the John Wanamaker Art Contest for a cartoon depiction of the radio Western hero Tom Mix. He received a scholarship in Columbia University's National Arts Journalism Program and taught at Northwestern University and Yale School of Drama. He accepted a job at Long Island University's graduate school. Among his many awards are membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1995, the National Cartoonists Society Milton Caniff Award in 2004, and a recipient of the 2006 Creativity Foundation Award. He wrote more than thirty books, plays, and film scripts. In 1958, he published his first collection of satirical cartoons, Sick, Sick, Sick. In 1963, he published his first novel, Harry, The Rat With Women, and in 1965, he wrote The Great Comic Book Heroes.
