An English actress born on December 22, 1907 in Croydon, Surrey. She attended Woodford School in Croydon and attended the Central School of Speech and Drama. She rose to stardom in 1934 when she played Juliet in the legendary stage production of Romeo and Juliet in which Laurence Olivier and John Gilgud exchanged the roles of Romeo and Mercutio. With Gilgud, she subsequently played Beatrice and Benedick in Fanfare Without Grinding, in which they performed together more than once, including a European tour of the Shakespeare Memorial Theater in 1955. She also played Cordelia in Shakespeare's King Lear during this tour. When she played Beatrice opposite Gilgud for the first time in 1950, Gilgud found her performance to be revealing while Peter Hall commended her "English containment and decency." She remained successful in her British theatrical performance throughout her career, and she had a special luster in some roles, such as her performance in The Three Sisters (1937) as Irina, as well as the plays The Heiress (1949), and Antonio and Cleopatra (1953). She died of a stroke on June 14, 1991, at the age of 83.
