An English actress, born in Croydon, Surrey. She attended Woodford School in Croydon and attended the Central School of Speech and Drama. She rose to stardom in 1934 when she played Juliet in the legendary stage production of Romeo and Juliet in which Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud played the role of Romeo in alternation. With Gielgud, she subsequently played Beatrice while he played Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing. She also worked together in Shakespeare's King Lear.
She remained successful in her British theatrical performances throughout her career, such as her roles in Three Sisters (1937) as Irina, as well as the plays The Heiress (1949), and Antony and Cleopatra (1953). She died of a stroke on June 14, 1991, at the age of 83.
