American director, screenwriter, and producer. He worked with Warner Brothers from 1944 to 1950, especially in Mildred Pierce (1945), for which he received an Oscar nomination. To support the family, he left school before completing the eighth grade. He continued his artistic career after working at Radio City Music Hall during the Great Depression. |
