An Irish actress, born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. She was nominated for a Tony Award on Broadway for Best Dramatic Actress in 1956 and 1958. She married actor Denis O'Dea (1956-1978), had a child, and remained with him until his death in 1978.
Her most important works include The DuPont Show of the Month (1957), Doctor Zhivago (1965), King of Kings (1961), and The Last Days of Pompeii (1984). She was raised in the Republic of Ireland and educated at the St. Louis Convent. She began her acting career in 1940 with an amateur Gaelic theater group, and in 1944, she appeared frequently in the productions of the Abbey Theatre. In 1947, she stood on stage in London.
Her first film in British cinema was Hungry Hill (1947). She participated in American cinema before returning to Britain in the seventies to continue her work in British cinema and television. She died in Dublin, Ireland, United Kingdom on November 16, 1986 following lung cancer surgery.
