She graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta and obtained a master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She then began her television career as a local news reporter in North Carolina before moving to New York, where she started her film career in the 1990s. Her artistic works include the movie The Stupids (1996), the movie A Mother's Love (2011), and the movie Broken Roads (2012).
