A French film director born in Paris. He began directing silent films before switching to musical comedies when talkies became available. He directed two fantasy comedies, It Happened Tomorrow (1944) and I Married a Witch (1942), while he was employed in the United States during World War II. In 1946, he went back to France. In 1960, he was chosen to join the Académie Française. His other films include La Bellezza del Diavolo (1950), Tout l'or du monde (1961), and Les Fêtes Galantes (1965). He died on March 15, 1981, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.
