A British actor born in Johannesburg, South Africa on March 19, 1909 and died in Palm Springs, California, USA on February 21, 1985 of lung cancer and kidney failure. He received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his film and television work. He had three wives and one child. His most important works are: And Then There Were None (1945), House by the River (1950), and The Man in the Iron Mask (1939). He was a British-American actor, born in South Africa, and educated in Britain and France. He attended Latina High School in Hammersmith, London. He spent a short time managing a nightclub in London, showed some acting talent, and decided to become an actor. The playwright Noel Coward became his sponsor. He developed his acting performance by training in the London theater, performing in various Broadway productions, such as Dracula and Anther Language. He began his film career with the British romantic drama Self Made Cady (1932), followed by five British films in 1933, such as Sorrell and Son (1933). He went to New York in 1935 and presented the Point Verlaine on Broadway. He then went to Hollywood and presented The Flame within (1935) with Maureen Sullivan and Herbert Marshall. After obtaining several minor roles in 1936, he had his real chance with Warner Bros. in the 1936 romance Anthony Adverse to become a romantic hero in the 1930s, but he changed that style, playing some dark drama roles in B-movies. Then, he worked in the films Adventures of the Sword, which transferred him to A-film category, such as The Saint in New York (1938). After his meeting with his wife, actress Ida Lupino in the movie Ladies in Retirement (1941) and obtaining American citizenship, he joined the US Marines and participated in the bloodiest battles in the history of the Navy, which lasted 3 days to liberate Tarawa Island, in which 3,000 Americans and 4,500 Japanese were killed, which led to the death of 3,000 Americans and 4,500 Japanese. He was in a bad mental state, and he returned to the cinema with the movie And Then There Were None (1945), repeating the success of his previous film on Monte Cristo, The Return of Monte Cristo (1946). He repeated the successful Al-Saif films The Black Arrow 1948. 1954, where he presented 39 episodes and the series The Pursuers (1961-1962), where he presented 40 episodes. His last movie was Terror in the Wax Museum (1973) and the last appearance in the series The Magician (1974) to retire completely. He died of lung cancer in 1985 at the age of 74 years.
