A Danish actor, born in Hellerup, Denmark, as Nils Anton Alfhild Asther. He died on October 13, 1981, in Stockholm, Sweden. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. He got married to the singer, actress, composer, and songwriter Vivian Duncan in 1930 and divorced her in 1932 after having a child with her. Among his most important works are The Sea Bat (1930), The Man in Half Moon Street (1945), The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932), and The Cossacks (1928). He was born in Denmark to a wealthy family from Sweden. After finishing high school he joined the Royal Dramatic Training Academy in Sweden, and after graduating, he began his career in Danish theatres. Then he met director Mauritz Stiller, who assigned him the starring role in the Swedish silent film Vingarne in 1916. His cinematic works continued with Victor Sjöström in Sweden and Michael Curtiz in Germany until 1927 when he moved to Hollywood to perform romantic roles and his career in Hollywood continued until 1934. Afterward, he was blacklisted for violating his contract with the production company and headed to Britain for 4 years, where he made some British films. After returning to Hollywood in 1938, his career declined, and by 1949 he was working as a truck driver, with some rare television appearances. In 1958, he returned to Sweden with some small appearances in cinema, theater, and television.
