He spent many years at the Cleveland Playhouse from 1920, where he met his future wife, stage actress Hazel Harrison. He then became a Broadway actor after moving to New York, appearing in such famous plays as The Cherry Orchard (1931), Long Day's Journey into Night (1941), The Iceman Cometh (1946), and Life with Father (1947). |
