An American writer, theater critic, journalist, and one of the most influential writers of musical comedy in the United States in the 20th century. He is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,and he began his career as a newspaper columnist for The Washington Times before moving to The New York Times. He also wrote numerous plays and screenplays. Many of his plays were adapted into successful films, including You Can't Take It With You (1930), for which he won the Pulitzer Prize; Once in a Lifetime (1936), for which he also won the Pulitzer Prize; and The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939).
