She was the inspiration of the famous playwright George Bernard Shaw, and embodied some of the greatest female roles on stage and screen...Read more in the twentieth century. She starred in Shaw's masterpieces Pygmalion and Saint Joan on the British theater in the 1930s. She worked closely with the Irish writer in her twenties while he was in his eighties. She appeared in critically acclaimed roles for over 50 years, including the movie "Separate Tables", in which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1958. She participated in the movie The Elephant Man in 1980. She passed away at her home in Beaconsfield, West London, on May 14, 2003, at the age of 90.
