German writer, born on November 19, 1900, in Mainz, Germany. Born into a Jewish family and married to a Hungarian Communist, Seghers escaped Nazi-controlled territory through wartime France, where she was granted a visa and gained ship's passage to Mexico. She joined the Communist Party of Germany in 1928. Her writing credits include The Seventh Cross (1944), The Light on the Gallows (1976), and Transit (2018). She died on June 1, 1983, in East Berlin, German Democratic Republic.
