He also completed advanced courses for screenwriters and film directors in 1980 and worked primarily as a screenwriter before turning to directing. He also won the Russian National Nika Award in 2007 and the Golden Eagle Award for The Island (2006) in the same year and was awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia in 2008. He was a member of the Moscow Film Festival jury several times.
