A Belarusian, born in Moscow. He studied mathematics and applied linguistics at Moscow State University, graduating in 1971. He also completed advanced courses for screenwriters and film directors in 1980 and worked primarily as a screenwriter before turning to directing. He won an award for his film, The Wedding, at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. He also won the Russian National Nika Award in 2007 and the Golden Eagle Award for The Island (2006) in the same year and was awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia in 2008. He was a member of the Moscow Film Festival jury several times. |
