American actor born in New York City, on 23 December 1925. His most notable films include King of Kings (1961), Dirty Harry (1971), and The Enforcer (1976). He was nominated twice for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for The Pigeon That Took Rome (1962), and Houseboat (1958). He co-starred in many Broadway plays, including One More River (1960), which earned him a Tony nomination. He also appeared in a number of TV series and movies, including Monty Nash (1971), and The Reporter (1964). He died on 17 July 1995 in Palm Springs, California of lung cancer, at age 69.
