An English actor, writer, and theater director, born on June 14, 1949, in Cape Town, South Africa. He played almost every major role in Shakespearean theater, from King Lear to Richard III. He studied at Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. In 1985, he won the prestigious Olivier Award for his performance as Richard III. He also played roles in a number of successful films, including Shakespeare in Love (1998). He died on December 2, 2021, in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK, at the age of 72, of cancer.
