British actor born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 9 October 1900. After studying chemistry for a while, he decided to drop out to pursue acting. He studied diction, poetry and language, and won an award at the Edinburgh Music Festival. He taught diction at New College, and was also a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. By the end of his life, he'd been president of the University of Edinburgh and they awarded him an honorary PhD in Law after his term as president. He was also appointed Chairman of the British Empire. His most notable works include Stage Fright (1950), A Christmas Carol (1951), An Inspector Calls (1954), and Wee Geordie (1955). He was nominated for a BAFTA in 1953 for his role in Folly to Be Wise (1952). He married actress Naomi Plaskitt and had one daughter. He died of Lung Cancer on 19 October 1976 in London, UK.
