In 1953, he went to Munich, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Munich, but he eventually dropped out and worked in the independent theatre. In 1960, he published his first children's book with his friend George Lentz, who convinced him to work under the penname Janosch. During his years of work, he published many children's books in cooperation with various publishing houses.
