One of the most prominent German children's story writers and illustrators. He was born in the city of Hindenburg (now known as Zabrze), in Poland, to a family of German and Polish origins. After World War II, his family fled to West Germany, specifically to the city of Oldenburg, where he worked in a textile mill. In 1953, he went to Munich, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Munich, but he eventually dropped out and worked in the independent theatre. In 1960, he published his first children's book with his friend George Lentz, who convinced him to work under the penname Janosch. During his years of work, he published many children's books in cooperation with various publishing houses.
