An American actor and newsreader, he worked for NBC and ABC from 1943 to 1997. David was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, USA, and attended New Hanover High School, then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Emory University, and Vanderbilt University, before entering service in the United States Army in 1940. After his medical discharge, he worked in journalism for United Press International in several of its southern bureaus. In 1943, he moved to Washington, D.C., in search of a job with CBS Radio, but instead took a job with NBC, becoming its White House correspondent.
