A Canadian-American screenwriter, director, and producer of English origins, born in London, UK. He moved to Canada with his family at 8 years old. He went to school in Canada and studied Law at McGill University, Oxford, and Trinity College. After joining Columbia pictures in London, he began writing. His first work was "Maybe That's Your Problem", a stage production originally played on the West End.
He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974). He has over 50 works in TV. His credits include To Heal a Nation, Kissinger and Nixon, Love of Life, and Ike: Countdown to D-Day. He is a fluent French speaker. He is married to actress Gloria Carlin and they have two children.
