An actress, singer, and operatic artist, born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and spent most of her childhood there, where she sang at the age of six at Knoxville High School and sang in the choir when she was in her early teens. Her family then moved to Los Angeles, California, where she completed high school and won a music award. After high school, she entered the Los Angeles College of Music to study with conductor Gastone Usigli between 1948 and 1951. She also appeared with Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy on a radio series, and sang with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in concerts at UCLA. She also appeared in numerous commercials for the Lux Radio Theatre. She began her acting career in the early 1950s, appearing in a variety of films, including Marry Me Again, Sleeping Beauty, and Like Sunday, Like Rain.
