An American actress, born in New York City, USA. She played the wise cashier in the radio series Duffy's Tavern and the haughty maid in the television series Hazel in 1961, and the miserable woman in the movie Come Back Little Sheba. In addition to being a stage actress who appeared in Broadway plays for more than forty-five years, she worked in the Pittsburgh Playhouse before standing on the Broadway stage for the first time opposite Humphrey Bogart in the play Hell's Bells in 1925. In the early fifties, she made her film debut in Come Back Little Sheba in 1952, opposite Burt Lancaster, which won her an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Cannes Film Festival Award.
