A Canadian writer and director. He directed the film Alone or with Others (1962) while he was a history student at the University of Montreal. Dirty Girl (1972), Réjeanne Padovani (1973), and Gina (1975) are some of his other works. In addition, he produced the Quebec Critics Award-winning documentary Comfort and Indifference (1982) and created the screenplay for the Radio-Canada series Duplessis (1978). The Crime of Ovide Plouffe (1984) marked Arcand's return to commercial cinema after a ten-year break. His comedy The Decline of the American Empire (1986) was a huge hit, winning multiple accolades, including the Cannes Film Festival Critics' Prize and Best Foreign Film of 1986. The Barbarian Invasions (2003) reinforced his widespread praise and made him a prominent figure in Canadian and worldwide film.
