American actor born in Evanston, Illinois on 28 January 1914. He was an active member of the drama club at Northwestern University, where he majored in Mathematics, and appeared in several stage productions there. He made his Broadway debut in 1935. In 1938, the same year he received his Law degree from Harvard, he made his film debut on Out West with the Hardy's (1938). His most notable works include Detour (1945), The Brute Man (1946), Bruce Gentry (1949), and The Great Jesse James Raid (1953). He married 3 women and had 1 child. He had a very turbulent life outside of acting which ultimately affected his acting career. In 1965 he shot and killed his third wife and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He got out on parole in 1971 and died 8 months later on 7 August 1972 due to heart problems in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
