An American actor born in Ossining, New York. He studied at the Fagin School of Dramatic Art and began working in professional theater in 1938 and appeared on Broadway. After WWII he returned and became a member of Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio and worked with Elia Kazan and returned to Broadway until he was discovered by Universal Studios in the early 1950s and appeared in supporting roles in films like The Sleeping City (1950), Tomahawk (1951), and Meet Danny Wilson (1952).
His notable works include The Man from Laramie (1955), Great Day in the Morning (1956), and The Screaming Skull (1958). His last appearance was on Ape (1976). He retired in 1987. He married Jean Fleming and had 3 children and she remained with him until he died on 9 July 2001 in California, USA.
