An Indian actress, born in Mangalore, Karnataka, India. She started her career in advertising before entering the artistic field in the 1970s. She presented many roles in plays that were later turned into Kannada versions. She became famous in the series (Ye Jo Hai Zindagi). In 1984, she won the award for playing the role of Kavari Amma in the Bollywood film Swades. Her other works include the film Akka Thangi (2008), the Kannada film Road to Sangam (2010), and the horror film Aakramana (2014). She won the Smt. Lakshmi Bai Award in 2014. She worked in more than seventy films and won the Best Performance Award at the International Indian Film Academy Awards in 2005 for the film Swades.
