An Australian actress, born in Melbourne, Australia. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by The Queen in 1970 for her services to the theater. She also won a Gielgud Award for Excellence in the Dramatic Arts by the Shakespeare Guild. She graduated from Methodist Ladies' College, and, much later, she received an honorary degree from the University of Melbourne. She won four Tony Awards for her roles in several plays. Her most important works include Lantern Hill (1989), The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), and Birth (2004).
