American actress born in Enid, Oklahoma, on 30 June 1901. She began acting at the age of 7 in vaudeville theater. After school, she moved to New York and began working in Broadway. She made her onscreen debut on the film Lucky Boy (1928) in a minor role, and her first major role was in the film Little Caesar (1931). Other major films of hers include the drama Life Begins (1932), the crime/drama I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932), and the comedy Havana Widows (1933). She debuted her famous character Turchy Blane which she played in a series of 7 films, the first of which was Smart Blonde (1937). She appeared in several other works in film as well as TV, last of which was Tiger by the Tail (1970). She retired shortly afterwards because of lung cancer. She died on 1 May 1971.
