English actress born on 22 February 1933 in Blackgang, Isle of Wight, UK. She later moved to King's Cross where her parents managed a pub. She went to Dartford Grammar School and received a scholarship to RADA. She appeared in several stage productions in London then made her Broadway debut. Her first TV breakthrough was on the series The Rag Trade (1961). Her first theatrical success was on the play "Rattle of a Simple Man" on the Garrick Theatre in London, and in 1969 she appeared on a West End production titled So What About Love. In the 1980s, she toured the UK with the Royal Shakespeare Company and later the National Theatre. She was appointed OBE in 1974.
