An American opera singer and actor, born on October 14, 1907 in Pennsylvania. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his singing activity. He was married four times and had two children. He was born in Pennsylvania to a Welsh father. He worked in coal mines until 1926, when he won a scholarship at Syracuse University. However he chose instead to study music at New York University. He trained in the opera, then worked in Broadway and opera theaters until 1935, when he signed a contract with MGM and made his first films, Reckless (1935). His most important works include: Everybody Sing (1938), A Night at the Opera (1935), Show Boat (1936) and Radio Days (1987). He died at the age 84 .
