An American actor, born in North Carolina, on September 22, 1907. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 1976 and 1980. He was married four times and had one son. He graduated from Virginia Episcopal High School in 1925 to join the University of North Carolina to become a writer. He edited the college magazine, and joined the university's drama team. After graduating in 1928, he worked in Broadway theaters, and achieved great successes. His most important works include: Strange Triangle (1946), All the King's Men (1949), A Place in the Sun (1951) and Dr. Renault's Secret (1942). He died of cancer at the age of 75 years.
