An American actor, born in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, to Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. He married Erna Kay (1932-1988), they had no children, and she remained with him until his death. His works include The Desert Hawk (1959), Let's Make Love (1960), Fifi Blows Her Top (1958), and The Joey Bishop Show (1962-1965).
He began his career in vaudeville before moving on to cinema in the early thirties. He worked with Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, participating in their comedies and playing the role of the villain in the comedies of the fifties. In 1956, he joined the Three Stooges team, replacing Shemp Howard, his friend, who died in 1955, but he left the team in 1958 to be with his sick wife.
He spent the sixties making film and television appearances. In 1944, Columbia Pictures signed a contract with him and brought him to Hollywood to participate in musical comedies, such as Hey, Rookie (1944) and the movie Eadie was a Lady (1945). In the 1970s, he participated in animated series. He died in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA on March 1, 1988 of heart failure.
