She became known as a Broadway actress as well as a leading and supporting actress in B-films in the 1930s. Her family moved to New York in the early 1920s. The Gale Sisters worked on Broadway in shows such as George White's Scandals (1931), and they headed West to make their first film, the short Poor Little Rich Boy (1932). June then separated from her sisters, who preferred retirement and marriage. She made her first solo film as a chorus girl in Roman Scandals (1933). She contracted with Fox and played some leading roles. She soon returned to supporting roles, and in 1939, she married the actor, composer, and pianist Oscar Levant; she put her profession aside, and they had three daughters Marcia, Amanda and Lorna. She suffered from severe mood swings, which affected her private life, especially since her marriage from the beginning was tumultuous. She tried to commit suicide. She reappeared in the 1960s on stage and television, sometimes with her husband and sometimes alone. She died of pneumonia at the age of 85 years.
