An American actor who was born in the Bronx, New York, USA. He married 8 times and had 6 children. His most important works include Battleground (1949), Singin' in the Rain (1952), and Cat-Women of the Moon (1953). He played the roles of villains as well as musical and comedic roles, working with stars such as Clark Gable, Esther Williams, Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, and Gene Kelly.
He attended St. Francis Xavier Military Academy. He moved to California to attend Los Angeles City College. He worked as a singing waiter, a copy boy for the New York Times, a runner for a broker on Wall Street. He served in the US Navy during World War II on the South Pacific front, and was wounded and lost all his teeth in an explosion on board the aircraft carrier he was working on during the battles.
After the war, he continued his career. He appeared in many films, most notably Fall Guy (1947) and Mighty Joe Young (1949). He appeared in many series and television shows, most notably The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp (1955-1961), where he participated in 68 episodes. His last television appearance was in 1982, and he then retired in Woodland Hills with the last of his eight wives. He died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA on May 21, 1998.
