An American actress born in Ottumwa, Iowa. She studied acting in Pasadena theater and after appearing in several plays she made her film debut on Thru Different Eyes (1929) in a very small role which didn't satisfy her so she returned to theater. However, she returned to film in 1931 after signing with MGM and appeared in several films, including her breakthrough, Scarface (1932). Other notable works of hers include The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932), Arsène Lupin (1932), and Dinner at Eight (1933). However, she was blacklisted in 1947 for having leftist views and being politically active, which she was for the rest of her life. She married twice and had one child. She died of pneumonia in Los Angeles on March 8, 2003.
