He enrolled at the University of Toronto and dropped out and worked in Toronto theaters. He relocated to New York City in 1907 to pursue his career in theater. After his success, he made his Broadway debut in 1912 in the play "Little Miss Brown," which caught the attention of an MGM executive who signed him for six silent films, beginning his journey in Hollywood. His first sound film was The Canary Murder Case (1929). He is known for Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933), Going Hollywood (1933), Lady for a Day (1933), and Imitation of Life in 1934. He made his last film, Magic Town (1947), while continuing his radio work and stage appearances.
