He got married to actress Rita Stanwood, and they had three children. Among his most famous works are: Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Lost Horizon (1937), It's a Wonderful Life (1946), and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). He died on December 21, 1958, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, at the age of 82.
