He began learning the basics of...Read more aviation at the age of sixteen and obtained a commercial pilot's license at the age of eighteen before joining the US Navy and participating in the Korean War as a fighter pilot. After the war, Armstrong worked as a test pilot for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which later became NASA. He participated in many test flights, including testing the X-15 plane that broke the sound barrier, and in 1962 he was selected by NASA to be an astronaut in the Apollo program. In 1969, he led the Apollo 11 mission and became the first person to walk on the moon. He retired from NASA in 1971 and worked as a professor of space engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He also held administrative positions in a number of companies and institutions and appeared in many documentary works about his journey into outer space.
