An American astronaut, born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, USA, and was of German, English, Scots-Irish, and Scottish descent. His passion for aviation began in his childhood, as his father took him to the Cleveland Air Races at the age of two. He obtained a student flight certificate at the age of sixteen before joining the US Navy and participating in the Korean War as a fighter pilot. After the war, Armstrong worked as a test pilot for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which later became NASA. He participated in many test flights, including testing the X-15, and in 1962, he was selected by NASA to be an astronaut in the Apollo program. In 1969, he led the Apollo 11 mission and became the first person to walk on the moon. He resigned from NASA in 1971 and worked as a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He also held administrative positions in a number of companies and institutions and appeared in many documentary works about his journey into outer space. He is known for Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey (2010) and Kitty Hawk: The Wright Brothers' Journey of Invention (2003).
