He brought charm to the big screen with his films, which dealt with middle-class issues and love affairs gently, at a time when action films were in vogue at the time. He frequently worked with actors like Amol Palekar, who portrayed shy young men in many of his romantic films. He also directed Amitabh Bachchan, Manzil, which became famous for the song Rimjhim Gire Sawan. His career extended to Bengali cinema, where he directed serials like Byomkesh Bakshi and Rajani.
