An Indian film director and screenwriter, born in Ajmer, India. He began his career as an illustrator and cartoonist for Blitz magazine in Mumbai, before moving into the film industry in the mid-1960s. His debut film, Sara Akash (1969), received critical acclaim and won awards. He brought charm to the big screen with his films, which dealt with middle-class issues and love affairs gently, at a time when action films were in vogue at the time. He frequently worked with actors like Amol Palekar, who portrayed shy young men in many of his romantic films. He also directed Amitabh Bachchan, Manzil, which became famous for the song Rimjhim Gire Sawan. His career extended to Bengali cinema, where he directed serials like Byomkesh Bakshi and Rajani.
