American model and actress, born on September 8, 1914 in Queens, to a middle-class family on Long Island. She worked as a model while studying at Columbia University. She appeared in television commercials long before she started her acting career in films. Having acquired a sophisticated British accent, she landed a number of roles playing an English woman. Her acting debut was in New Faces of 1937. She also appeared in such major productions as The Strange Woman (1946), Bodyhold (1949) and The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956).
