An American actress, she was born in East St. Louis, Illinois, United States. She lived in Illinois during her early childhood, and at the age of twelve she moved with her family to Burbank, California, and then to Atlanta, Georgia. In 1966, she received a scholarship to study drama at the University of Georgia, where she spent two years. She began performing professionally at the age of seventeen at a theater called Shawnee Summer Stock. She auditioned for acting roles after moving to New York City with her child. Her first film role was in the movie The Battle of Love's Return (1971). She participated in How to Survive a Marriage (1974), Shivers (1975), and Fighting Mad (1976), and her artistic career continued.
