An American astronaut, born in Elmira, New York, USA. She studied at Syracuse University, Stanford University, and the U.S. Air Force Pilot School. Collins was a military instructor and the first woman to fly and command a Space Shuttle in history. She received numerous medals for her work and logged 38 days, 8 hours, and 20 minutes in outer space. She retired on May 1, 2006, to pursue other interests. She then became a member of the board of directors of the United States Agency for International Development and appeared in the documentary Woman in Motion. She wrote the film Spacewoman.
